Drain Before You Detox: The Missing Link Between Gut Health, Hormones, & Mold Recovery with Marina Ortega (The Poop Fairy)
If you’re dealing with constipation, bloating, brain fog, or you feel like every detox protocol makes you feel worse instead of better, this conversation is for you.
In this episode, I’m joined by Marina Ortega, founder of Scottsdale Hydrotherapy and co-founder of Trust Your Gut, to talk about one piece of healing she believes is often overlooked: supporting your body’s drainage pathways before asking it to detox. Marina shares her own journey through chronic constipation, mold exposure, and years of searching for answers before becoming a gut health educator.
We also discuss what colon hydrotherapy actually is, how the lymphatic system, bile flow, and bowel function work together to support the body’s natural detox pathways, and why so many people struggle to feel better even after trying supplements and cleanses. Marina also shares what she learned while recovering from severe mold exposure, her perspective on tools like castor oil packs and coffee enemas, and why she believes the gut-brain connection is an essential part of lasting healing.
Topics We Cover in This Episode:
- Why Marina says drainage should come before any detox protocol
- What colon hydrotherapy actually involves—and what to expect during a session
- How constipation can impact hormones, brain fog, and overall health
- The connection between the lymphatic system, bile flow, and detoxification
- What Marina learned from recovering from severe mold exposure
- How castor oil packs and coffee enemas fit into her wellness approach
- Why stress and nervous system regulation can show up as digestive symptoms
- Simple ways to support your body’s natural elimination pathways

Welcome back to the podcast. Today’s episode is one you’re going to want to send your friend immediately because
we’re talking about a piece of healing that so many people skip drainage before detox. Joining us today is Marina
Ortega, founder of Scottsdale Hydrotherapy, co-founder of Trust Your Gut. And she’s nationally known as the Poop
Fairy. Marina is on a mission to make gut health feel human, not clinical, approachable, and not shameful. She’s a
former professor turned gut health educator who has now administered over 3000 colonics. And her work is rooted
not just in education but in lived experience. And this conversation we’re diving into Marina’s personal story of mold
exposure, chronic constipation, exhaustion, and what led her to discover the missing pieces in true root cause
healing. We’re also getting into the powerful connection between the gut, brain, and nervous system. Why detox can
backfire when drainage pathways aren’t supported first, and what people need to understand about what a colonic is
and what it actually entails. If you’ve been trying to heal your gut, balance your body, and make sense of symptoms
that nobody seems to connect, this episode is going to give you a whole new lens. Let’s get into it. So Marina, super
excited to have you on the podcast. I am just intrigued by the fact that you were a professor and now you’re known
as the Poop Fairy. I love that because I’m a huge holistic gut person. So let’s start by telling people, if you don’t mind
your journey, like, how did you get here? And why did you end up opening Scottsdale hydrotherapy? And then we’re
going to talk all the things about mold and tons of good stuff.
Thank you for having me on. Well, I was a professor for about 15 to 20 years, and this is like back in my 20s when
constipation started for me. So back I’m 50 now. So this is like 30 years ago. Nobody was talking about pooping at all.
Even the doctors wouldn’t even literally say the word like poop. So I’m 20 years old, this young girl trying to navigate
this journey on why am I pooping maybe once every two weeks? So I was dealing with chronic constipation and I was
on a five year journey. I started losing my hair, depression, anxiety, nutrient deficient. Like all these things started
happening and I was exercising. I probably wasn’t hydrating as much as I should have. And at no doctor could tell me
anything. One doctor even said, hey, it’s all in your head and I suggest you take this anxiety medicine. And so the
journey began. Cat scan, MRI, I’m not getting any answers or like just take laxatives. I’m like, listen, I don’t want to be
addicted to them. And nothing would help until I stumbled across a naturopathic doctor. And she says, Marina, have
you ever tried colon hydrotherapy? And I thought, what on earth is that same thing, colonic colon hydrotherapy when
I use that term. And I said, listen, I’m desperate. I’ll check in, I will go get a colonic. So I went in, had my first session.
I looked at the therapist after my session. I said, this is freaking life changing. Like you just changed my life. I said, I
unloaded 7 pounds of poop in that one session. So I was so incredibly backed up and I just unloaded so much. It was
like this emotional, spiritual release. I mean, I was just like, woosh!
Like, well, you know, that like you weighed yourself.
She had a scale. So I weighed myself before the session and then after the session. So and we see that in our, in our
wellness center today, people will unload anywhere from 2 to 10 pounds of poop in a session. It’ll blow your mind
what people are really hanging on to. So at that point, I started working with her. We started correcting my
constipation, and I was kind of doing all the things, and I couldn’t believe that it just took highly filtered, warm water
and we were literally just irrigating the colon. That’s what colon hydrotherapy is. Your large intestine is about 5 to 6ft
long. So, you know, you’re just going in there and irrigating it with water and softening all the poop. Over time, the
poop gets hard like clay hard. So we’re just loosening up the stool and then boom, you just start eliminating the
evacuating the poop out, basically. So at that point I worked with her, corrected my constipation, and then it was in
2014 when she retired and I thought, oh my gosh, what am I going to do, you know? So I was so passionate at this
time about this topic and nobody was talking about it back then.
So I said, you know what, I’m going to drop out of my doctorate degree and I’m just going to give back and I’m going
to open up my own little wellness center. I’m going to do colon hydrotherapy, and I’m gonna spread the word, and I’m
going to educate as many people as I possibly can, because I’ll never forget when I was 20, very young and nobody
wanted to talk to me about it. Like I could barely talk my friends about it. It was so embarrassing, you know? So that’s
really how the journey began. Circle back. You know, circle around to today. We’re a full blown wellness center.
We’ve added on the ozone sauna, which is the rocket. We’ve got lymphatic drainage, we’ve got all kinds of things.
And I’ve kind of created this detox circuit incorporating colon hydrotherapy. So we’re really helping people detox
more to cellular, more to tissue level. It’s not like, oh, it’s just a little juice cleanse or, you know, just one colonic. It’s
really become this beautiful full circle thing that we’re helping people with now.
I have so many questions. And, you know, people talk about colonics, and I do think there’s probably a spectrum of
them. Right. And I think that you need to be working with somebody that knows what they’re doing. You don’t want
people putting random things in your colon, right? But you’re talking about warm water for the most part. How long
does it take? Like when you go in? Do they just like put it in until it’s stuck? Like, tell me, tell me what this process is
like.
So basically when you walk into our wellness center, obviously we do an intake form and we’re really big believers on
educating people on opening up your drainage pathways. You’ve got to be peeing, pooping, sweating and all of those
things. But when you go into a colon hydrotherapy session, we have an open system. There’s two types a closed
system, an open system. And basically what you’re doing is we’re educating the client on here’s the rectal nozzle. It’s
literally like the size of a number two pencil, and the client has to insert it. So it’s lubed up, it’ll insert it. There’s only
one way into your colon and you’ll insert it like an inch or an inch and a half into it. And then once we start the
session, we actually turn the water on for the client. So once we turn the water on, the water starts going into their
intestines. Their intestines are about six feet long. So the water is just slowly going in there. It’s like gravity fed,
right? So it’s slowly going in there. As the water is going in, you start to eliminate out poop essentially. So we’re just
really irrigating the colon. It doesn’t hurt. It doesn’t smell, it’s not uncomfortable. It’s quite relaxing actually.
Are they laying somewhere like on a bed or something where it’s just coming out? Do you have to be sitting on a
toilet? Like, what are they doing?
It’s like a reclined, glorified toilet. So it’s almost like you’re kind of sitting up, kind of laying down a little bit and it’s
like a toilet built into it. So it’s just this really incredible equipment that we operate. It’s called the angel water, and
it’s just great. And to answer your question, the sessions anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes, it really depends on the
person on how quickly they’re absorbing the water. So we do find that someone that’s chronically dehydrated, their
session will be a little bit longer.
And so then it just comes out into this stool receptacle. And then you’re able to tell like, can you tell from the stool
coming out? Like, man, they’re really constipated. Like, is it form? Does it have normal color, like stool or is it all just
liquid and water?
I think it’s all of the above. So we see it all. I mean, we absolutely see it all. So you can see it coming out of you.
There’s like a viewing tube and a mirror where you can actually watch exactly what’s coming out of you throughout
that session.
Wow.
I’m sorry. You’re pooping or peeing and it’s shooting out straight and connecting to the sewer system. So everything
about it is just really sterile. It’s clean.
Well, it’s just interesting because a lot of people have no idea. Like I try to talk to people about their stools and
they’re like, I don’t know, like, I don’t look at that. I’m like, you don’t know whether there look like rabbit pellets or
whether they look like a snake or what color. I mean, it’s important, right? It gives us a lot of clues as to like, what is
going on with you. Are you digesting your fat, is your bile working, etc.? So I think that is amazing. To your point. I
don’t think people realize sometimes how constipated they can be because our colon is so big. And then when you
have all that toxic material that’s supposed to leave your body setting in your body and sometimes recirculating in
your body, it’s not a good thing.
So it’s really toxic environment. Think about it. Like the girl that came in last week, she hasn’t pooped in like 14 days.
And you know, she’s on hormone therapy and she’s constipated. She’s on a GLP one now. And I’m like, wow, this is
quite the combination, right? So again, going back to opening up your detox pathways, right? Like we’ve got to get
you pooping because if not, you’re going to start to what? Reabsorb all those toxins, all of those hormones,
autointoxication is going to kick in, you’re going to be super toxic. And now guess what? All your hormones are out of
whack and you’re trying to figure out what’s going on.
Yeah, I love that. The whole drainage before detox, you were talking about pooping and peeing and sweating. Bile
flow is really important. So tell me a little bit more about that. Like I think a lot of times the people that don’t feel
better when they take thyroid hormone, or they take estrogen or whatever is going on. Lymphatics. Lymphatics are
super important as well. It’s because they’re not able to drain. They’re not able to detox. So how do you guys look at
that? Like you said, you have a whole circuit of therapy, which I think is great. I might need to come to Scottsdale
and.
Love it.
Because your clinic. But tell us about that. Like, why is that important? Do we do it all at once? Is there a certain
order? What do you see?
I think it really depends on the person. I think when it comes to drainage and detox, I mean, we scream that because
I feel like what’s going on out there right now is there’s so much hype about parasite cleansing, which is great. I love
parasite cleansing. I’m always parasite cleansing. But what will happen is someone will come in and say, I haven’t
pooped in, I don’t know, seven days, but I’m doing this parasite cleanse. I’m like, well, what are you doing? Why are
you doing a cleanse? You need to be peeing, pooping, and sweating before you do any type of cleanse. Don’t waste a
couple hundred bucks on any fancy cleanse out there unless you’re peeing, pooping, and sweating, right? Because
the colon is the largest way to evacuate everything out of your system. So she’s like, no wonder why brain fog. I’m
super bloated, I have a headache and I feel horrible. Marina, this is the worst I’ve ever felt. I’m like, okay, and I’m not
a doctor. I can’t prescribe diagnosed. So I’m like, okay, maybe pause the cleanse. Let’s get you pooping. Once you
get that drainage pathway open, then, you know, do whatever you want with cleansing. So it’s got some
hydrotherapy. We start someone off.
Typically, if this is what they want to do, you can kind of go in any order. Obviously colon hydrotherapy is going to be
the last thing that you do when you’re in the circuit. But we start off with lymphatic drainage. So we’re really big on
opening up your lymphatic system. I don’t think people realize, I mean, I think we have, what, 4 to 6l of blood and we
have twice of that in lymphatic fluid. And the lymphatic system is so important. I mean, it’s clearing all the
pathogens. And we have all these lymph nodes, right? And they’re just kind of stopping and clearing out and cleaning
all these pathogens throughout the whole lymphatic drainage system, right? It’s kind of like the sewer system. We
got to keep it cleaning and moving and dumping and draining. Well, I’m finding that a lot of people are stagnant or
they’re sitting around at their job too much and they’re just not getting the movement. So I think you can do it for
free. Walking, rebounding, the vibrational play, all of that’s great for lymphatic drainage. So I really like to start off
there saying, talk to me about what you’re doing for drainage, because the lymphatic system isn’t like the
cardiovascular system.
It doesn’t have like the heart pumps it, right? The cardiovascular system. Well, the lymphatic system doesn’t really
have anything other than, you know, when you’re breathing, inhaling and exhaling, it’s starting to move stuff
throughout. Your system starts getting it’s like a river starts getting everything flowing. So we’re really big believers.
On starting off with the lymphatic system and draining it. You know, let’s get stuff moving out of you. And then going
in after that to the Hackett, the Hackett is the ozone sauna, which is super powerful. And that’s about a 30 minute
session. And it’s just unbelievable. You’ve got far infrared, you’ve got frequency specific microcurrents. I mean,
you’ve got ozone in there. It’s unbelievable. And we love it because it starts to help inactivate anything viral fungal
heavy metals. Candida, you what comes out of people after that session. Like you can see it on the towel. Like it’s
just there’s gray and black specks. It’s like, what is that? I’m like, I don’t know. Is it heavy metals? It’s, it’s something
coming out of you. Right? And then they’ll go into colon hydrotherapy and just start unloading and dumping. And so
we love it. That’s what I created. It’s beautiful.
So the lymphatic drainage, what is that exactly? Is that like a machine? Like what are they doing? Are they
rebounding? How are you doing that? And how long does that take?
About a 50 minute session. You’re on a massage table. They’ll do the front of your body and the back of your body.
And it looks like a glass cup, but it’s not cupping because cupping is stagnant. It has heat and like vacuum suction.
And so it’s like lifting and pulling, lifting and pulling, lifting and pulling, it doesn’t hurt. It feels very wonderful. And
what we’re doing, it’s kind of getting into that fascia layer basically, because we’re like lifting and pulling, lifting and
pulling. And it’s just really, it’s kind of difficult to explain. You’d have to see it and you can see it on our Instagram.
But and so what it’s doing, it’s like getting into that fascial layer and opening up. Think of your lymphatic system like
a hose. And so over time, it bows down with fat and stuff like that, right. And starts getting pinched. So we’re trying
to open up that hose. So boom, all this water and all this stuff can start. We can start clearing stuff basically. And so
they’ll do the front of the body, the back of the body, 99% of the time. When you get off that massage table, you will
literally see a silhouette of all these gray and black spots, like the silhouette of your body. It’ll blow your mind again.
What is that? I mean, toxins, heavy metals. I mean, I don’t know, but it’s junk coming out of you.
Yeah, I love lymphatic massage. Lymphatic drainage. I think it’s great. And then to your point, getting in a sauna with
ozone, we do a lot of blood ozone in my clinic. You would be shocked if the stuff that comes out of people and, you
know, if you’re sweating and then doing the colonic, I bet, I mean, so that how long the ozone is 30 minutes. And
then so you’re looking at like a two, 2.5 hour treatment. If you do all of it right.
They’re hanging out with us, like for about probably three hours. We have our trust your gut tea that we created. So
they’re starting off like an herbal tea. The relaxing and it’s just this really cool, like spa environment, you know,
people think, oh, I’m gonna get a colonic. I’m like, I’m so scared. I was to actually. And that was another reason why I
opened up because I was going around to all these places and I just couldn’t find anything clean, clinical, bougie, just
like a naturopathic doctor of some sort on site. And that was really my vision when I wanted to, you know, when I was
creating Scottsdale hydrotherapy. And that’s exactly what we created. I wanted it to be very welcoming. It’s very
normal to talk about poop, and we’re laughing and parasites and they’re like, you are our people. We can talk about
this. We feel comfortable, and that’s the environment we wanted to create. We have a lot of fun doing it.
No, I love that you mentioned kind of whenever we were starting before we started, that you got really sick recently,
not too long ago and ended up finding out you had black mold. And I think a lot of people struggle with mold, don’t
realize it. And it’s hard to get rid of, right? It’s hard to clean up. Can you tell us what happened?
I feel like talking about mold is like the silent epidemic that no one’s talking about. It was about a year and a half ago,
and we were up north in Flagstaff. The elevation is about 7000. And I was having issues breathing and I thought,
gosh, what’s going on? So I called my doctor. He said, Marina, there’s a really bad bacteria going around. It’s called
Mycoplasma, it’s walking pneumonia. I said, man, I’m really struggling with breathing. He said, let’s test you and you
have to do a blood test. I said, okay, he calls me back. He says, listen, I’ve never seen levels this high ever. And I
said, what do I do? He goes, you’re going on antibiotics for 22 days and steroids for about, I don’t know, 3 or 4 days. I
said, okay, I’ll do whatever I need to do. I said, because I can’t breathe. And he gave me an inhaler like nothing was
working. And it was around day 15. I’m like, listen, these antibiotics, they’re not working. Like, I can’t breathe. He’s
like, listen, I’m gonna put you back on antibiotics for another 22 days. So total 42 days steroids again for another
three days. And let’s just see how far we can get, he said. Mycoplasma is really hard to kill because it creates like this
little gel around it. And so it protects itself. And I thought, okay. So he said, Marina, you have this mycotoxin, this
mold test that you purchased like months ago for me. And I said, oh, okay. So I took the test, called me back. He
says, Marina, in my 25 years of practicing, I’ve never seen black mold bubbles this high, ever.
He says, you’re living in black mold. I said, there’s no way. He said, you’re dealing now with mycoplasma and mold,
right? It’s like bacteria and fungus and all this stuff. And I thought, okay, and the breathing wasn’t getting any better.
And so I said, what am I going to do? And he says, you need to treat the mold. You need to figure out where the
source is. Because let’s just say if the black mold is living in my home from a water damaged leak or, you know,
refrigerators and ice makers like these are all common places. The washing machine for black mold. He said, I want
you to test. So I brought some guys out to test. I took it to the point where actually I hired a mold dog to come out,
and she actually was way better than the guys that tested the home because they took like six weeks to get back.
Long story short, we tested my office, the home twice. Nothing worked. Couldn’t find any black mold again. I had the
girl come out with the mold dog. She was phenomenal. And she’s like, you have no mold. We’re not finding it here.
And I go, well, where is it? She says, I don’t know. So then I started consulting with some doctors and I was like, okay,
how do I get this black mold out of my lungs? Okay. Because I’m still now having issues like Steve and I wrote our
living will. Like, I’m like bedridden for three and a half months.
I’d get up and go work for 45 minutes, go lay down for three hours. It was this whole thing. So I’m scared, like scared
for my life, right? So one of the doctors quoted me 9000 cash, no guarantee. I thought, oh my God, another one
quarter to 5000 cash. No guarantee. Steve looked at me. He said, listen, we have this beautiful wellness center. You
can do colonics, lymphatic drainage, the ozone, you can do all of these things. We even created Trust Your Gut,
which is our product line, which we have USDA castor oil kits and coffee enemas, herbal teas, he says. I even created
an antiparasitic tea. So he said, why don’t we start off there? And I said, okay. So I was doing the detox circuit once a
week, and then I was doing four coffee enemas a week. I was doing castor oil packs like five nights out of the week.
And every day I just kept getting better and better and better. And it was probably about seven months into me
detoxing that we retested. And he says, oh my gosh, Marina. He says, your levels are like halfway down. Like, keep
doing what you’re doing. And I was like, you’re kidding me. This is great. And again, I just kept feeling better and
better and better. So that was really my mold story. Come to find out, a lot of people want to know how I got the
black mold. And it was in a really old gym. I was in the steam room steaming, and I was steaming like four days out
of the week, and I just thought, I’m going there to be healthy.
Then I was working with an environmental scientist, and he says, Marina black mold is notorious in steam rooms. If I
were you, I’d never walk in there because you were literally inhaling it and breathing it and like, killing yourself. And I
thought, okay, good to know. But what I will tell people is this like a lot of people have built in steam rooms, they
have gyms that they steam in. Keep doing that, but just keep an eye on it. Like my gym. It was musty. I could, like,
smell it like something was off. There’s lots of. There was water damage. And the women’s locker room. We didn’t
have access to too many gyms at that time when I was doing the steam room. So that’s kind of the story. I think our
bodies are so resilient, right? Like they can naturally detox, but mine definitely needed help. My liver enzymes were
through the roof to the point where we were getting concerned because I was purging so much black mold out of my
liver in a short period of time. So then again, I started doing liver cleansing on top of that. And I think the liver is so
underrated. I mean, even when it comes to hormones, like estrogen, like things just get hung up in that liver. Hence
the reason why I created the coffee enemas and the castor oil packs, because they’re so beneficial and they help
detoxify your liver. And that was a huge thing in my detoxing circuit when I was detoxing from black mold.
Yeah. I mean, I think that’s all fascinating because so many people end up with mold issues and they don’t know
what to do, or mold is just really hard to detox from. And the problem is you have to have the foundations, right? You
have to have your lymphatics moving. You have to be pooping. You have to be sweating. You have to be peeing. Or
to your point, it’s like the mold can’t leave. And so I think that it’s pretty cool that you realized this, and it sounds like
you did it without a bunch of, you know, sometimes people end up on these terrible binders and these big, huge
protocols from Celcor. And it’s like, great. But if you’re not pooping and peeing and sweating and things don’t move
through your bile flow, those binders aren’t going to help anything. And so I think it’s just important for people to
realize that and do your point. Like you were drinking the teas, doing the castor oil packs, which we can talk about
that to explain to people you’re doing the lymphatics, you’re doing the sweating, you’re doing the colonics. What do
castor oil packs do? I love them. I use castor oil on my liver every night. But explain to the listeners, like, what does it
do? What is it? How is it helpful for detox from anything, including mold?
He created the castor oil pack because I was testing a lot of different castor oil and it was contaminated. And I
thought, My God, I’m putting this on my skin and it’s leaching into my body. Hence the reason why we created the
Trust Your Castor Oil pack. And it’s USDA organic, which was really important to us. And third party tested castor oil is
really powerful. It’s got, y’know, cylic acid in it. That’s what makes it castor oil. It’s from the castor bean. And it
basically is, y’know, silicic acid is like a fatty, like a rich compound, like a mega six nine. So it’s real thick, right?
Castrol is thick. So once you put the castor oil on your abdomen area, then you put the pack on top right to secure it.
Castor oil can stain clothing, right? So we made ours with organic cotton. What I was finding out there is that a lot of
castor oil packs have plastic. And I’m like, great, I’m putting a heating pad on top. Now I got this, you know, castor oil
seeping into my skin and plastics. So we decided to create ours with organic cotton.
So you put the castor oil pack on, and then I like to put the heating pad on top of it. That’s going to activate the silicic
acid and start to drive it into the lymphatic tissues to create movement over your abdomen. So it’s like almost like
opening up that like waking up peristalsis, like wake up call and wake up like let’s, it’s very anti-inflammatory,
antimicrobial. So it will kind of soften your belly. At least that’s what I found. Each morning I woke up, it was like
much softer and I was able to have a bowel movement. Now keep in mind, the castor oil pack that we created will
also hit the liver area and the gallbladder, which is super important. So it’s going to start stimulating and opening up
the bile ducts to kind of start dumping that bile out. Right? Think of bile, a little dump truck. Like we got to get it out.
We got to pee it out, poop it out, sweat it out, all of that. So I’m a big believer in castor oil packs and keeping it
simple.
Yeah, I love that. I think, you know, a lot of my Hashimoto’s patients, we talk about castor oil packs as well. And so I
think that it’s very helpful. But you’ve got to kind of be doing it all together. That’s what I tell people too. You can’t
just put a castor oil pack on and be like, oh, I’m detoxing, right? Like, you have to drink the water. You have to make
sure you’re actually going poop. We have to move our body. We have to make sure we’re eating well to make sure
that lymphatics are moving. And so I think all of that is helpful information for people, though, to understand. There
are just some very basic things you can do to help move things through your body so that we can flush our body out.
Definitely. And that’s why we created the coffee enema kit, too. I think a lot of people are just walking around with
sluggish livers. I mean, you know, our blood circulating and cleaning everything out every four minutes. And we’re
exposed to so many toxins every day. And it’s going back to the basics. I mean, this is like 1500 BC. They were doing
coffee enema kits. They were doing the castor oil packs and whatnot. But the coffee. What makes coffee enema so
special is that it’s got palmitic acid in it. And so think of it like a supercharged caffeine is what it is. And so once it
goes through your rectum, shoots through the hepatic portal valve, and it’s going to stimulate and start to open up
the bile ducts basically in your liver. So it’s like supercharging your liver, opening up those bile ducts so it can start
dumping out that bile and opening up stuff. It’ll also increase your master antioxidant glutathione by like 500 to
700%. Like it’s just mind blowing on how beneficial in my opinion, a coffee enema is.
And so you said you created this is something that people do at home or this is something they go somewhere and
do.
You can do it at home. I wanted to bring these two wellness tools into people’s homes, because not everyone can
come to Scottsdale hydrotherapy and detox with us. And, you know, people are sick with mold or dealing with
constipation. I thought, I want to help everybody out there. And they can simply start if they’re dealing with
constipation or maybe have some autoimmune, or if they want to detox heavy metals, whatever it is, they can start
detoxing at home. I was really sick of the price gouging and the greenwashing out there saying, oh, it’s organic. Well,
what does organic mean? Or it’s wildly crafted. Like, what does that mean? Like people are putting this into their
bodies and onto their skin. And it was really important to us to make sure it was third party tested, tested for mold,
obviously, because I had mold. And, you know, I think everything’s like under $40. So it’s not like you’re breaking the
bank, but you can purchase these two things to really get a head start on detoxing or constipation relief. And they’re
awesome.
Yeah, I think a lot of people forget that mold lives in coffee. A lot of times it lives in peanut butter. It lives in a lot of
food. So if somebody is thinking about doing a coffee enema, you said the coffee enema will help with opening up
their portal vein and helping with flow through your liver and just getting rid of toxins. It also helps our body make
glutathione. Are there any other benefits to the coffee enema? Are there any downsides? Because sometimes on
social media, you’ll hear people say, like, we shouldn’t be putting caffeine in our rectum because it can put a hole in
our rectum. It can. So like, tell me about the pluses and the minuses in case people are asking about that. And then
also tell people about, is this the same thing as like at your shop where it’s a tiny little something the size of a pin
that you just put in your rectum? Like, how does it work?
Yeah, basically. Yeah. I mean, it’s like giving yourself a mini colonic is what it is, basically, and you will have to go to
trust your gut.shop because I have a bunch of educational videos and I think that’s step one. You’ll see me in my
bathroom literally saying, this is how you lube it up. You put it in your rectum, you lay down, you’re going to hold it
for a few minutes, and you can graduate up to maybe 12 minutes or 15 minutes. Then you get up and then you go to
the toilet and you start to evacuate. So there’s a lot more behind the coffee enema, the temperature of the water. It
has to be at more of a room. Warm temperature can’t be hot and things like that. So I think all of those things are
really important. But if you go to our website, there’s a lot of educational videos and I walk you through kind of step
by step by step on what to do and what not to do, but you can definitely do them at home in your bathroom.
Basically, you could do the coffee enema or even the castor oil pack and the coffee enema. Like I said, it’s only going
to go about 12in into your rectum, is what it’s doing. So it’s like I said, it’s like a mini colonic, but you can at least
start there and start getting some relief. As a matter of fact, I tell people, listen, if you’re dealing with constipation,
let’s back up. Start off with distilled water, warm water in the enema kit that we created. Maybe try doing that first.
And then once you get things moving, then you can graduate up to, you know, liver detoxification and coffee
enemas, because that’s what they’re great for.
So there’s no, like, there’s not a way somebody can hurt themselves if they do this at home.
I don’t think you can hurt yourself if you watch my educational videos that step by step, literally me, my bathroom
showing you how to brew the coffee, how to insert it, what to do. It’s like step by step. So I think if someone isn’t
thinking correctly and puts like hot water, you know, that’s too hot. Yeah, you’re going to burn yourself. That would
be dangerous. Right? So I think there’s things like that that you have to be precautious about, let’s just say.
But when people do it and they do it correctly, what are some like benefits? People will tell you whether it be
instantly two weeks, four weeks, are they going to feel something after one coffee enema?
Yeah, I think it really depends on the person and what they’re dealing with, right? Because I have people that are
doing this for longevity, anti-aging. It’s just part of their home protocols, what they’re doing it for. We’re dealing with
cancer clinics, alternative cancer clinics, and they will send their patients to us to do colonics. And then they’re doing
3 to 4 coffee enemas per week. They have uncertain protocols. So I’d say everyone’s pretty different on what the
protocol is going to look like or what it’s going to be like, but there’s just so many benefits. I mean, we have so many
success stories on people talking about, gosh, I felt great after one. Now I think people have to keep in mind you’re
not drinking the coffee. And some people that are sensitive to coffee, it’s not going through your digestive system,
right? So it’s going through your rectum. I do find that people are sensitive to coffee. They still do really well with a
coffee enema. But I always say you just have to kind of test one out and see how it goes. But we have a lot of
success stories. I mean, like, for me, it helped, you know, with me detoxing my liver, my liver enzymes were so high.
As a matter of fact, they were so high. We were really concerned, like seriously concerned. So I said, listen, I’m going
to do the four coffee enemas for the next three weeks and then we’re going to retest. Boom. We retested within
three weeks. He’s like back to normal. So just goes to show you on how powerful they are. But I always say, you
know, consult with your doctor, you know, like I’m not a doctor, so get with your doctor about it. Figure out a protocol
that’s gonna work for you. I mean, I’ve got my story of what worked for me as well, and I always share it, so. Yeah.
And to your point, if the coffee enema is increasing glutathione production, that’s going to help our liver as well. So
that’s an important piece of the story also. Another thing I wanted to chat with you about the gut brain nervous
system connection. I know that you talk about that. You talk about how stress and trauma and dysregulation show up
in GI symptoms like bloating and anxiety, things like that, which we talk about a ton burnout. And we were kind of
chatting before we started this. It’s even worse when you’re a woman in that like lovely perimenopause, menopause
age, right? We just, there’s so many things happening. Our hormones are changing, our body’s trying to detox and
metabolize those hormones. Maybe our thyroid hormones are now off. So we’re not pooping like we used to. Our
mood and sleep are different. It’s just there’s a lot of moving parts and a lot of it, I think is worse now than when our
grandmas and our moms went through it because of the chronic stress and dinging and overregulation that we have.
So give the listeners a little synopsis on your take on the, the gut brain nervous system access, because I talk about
it all the time, but I like it when other people talk about it because I don’t think I’m like the only person in the world
that I love.
I wish you would keep sharing all the information out there. I’ve learned so much from you and I can’t wait to read
your book. Yeah, I mean, think about it. I mean, there’s definitely a gut brain access connection. I mean, you got the
hypothalamus, you know, got the vagus nerve, and then your gut people are coming into us like totally overworked
over supplementing perimenopause, whatever it may be. And they’re so stressed out, they don’t know what’s
working. So their body is just like, like everything is wired so tight. Everything’s like just kind of shut and just they’re
stressed out and it’s almost like kind of let that go. So they don’t know how to let that go. They can’t poop, they’re
stressed out, their hormones are out of whack. And I think, you know, everything is so confused and their entire
nervous system. And you talk a lot about that too. It’s like this whole messaging center. It’s absolutely connected.
You know, I think the gut has its own little enteric system with all the neurons firing off and talking and 100%, there’s
no question. I mean, it’s such a difference when I see a client that’s not stressed out and one that’s super stressed
out and just everything that’s going on with the symptoms. I mean, it’s bloating, it’s gas, it’s diarrhea, then it’s
constipation. So I feel like everything is not communicating well. It’s like this big command center, our brain, our gut,
everything’s talking right, our hormones. And we see that every single day.
I think people are very, very dysregulated and they’re trying to figure out how do I get regulated and what do I do?
Where do I start? And like I told you, I’m in menopause. When I was in perimenopause last year and a couple years
prior, I feel like we need to start talking about this. Like, this should be part of like adulting, right? Let’s talk about
how your hormones work. What is endocrine system? I mean, people have no clue what that is, right. And how that
operates and how that works. You know, metabolizing food. They think it’s just watching calories, you know, they
don’t really understand the breakdown of it and how important that is and how it fuels our body and cells. And I think
everything is absolutely connected. I mean, if you’re not pooping, your entire system is going to be out of whack. And
we see it every day. You know, it’s like the lady that came in who’s on menopause on a GLP one for weight loss, on
hormone therapy. She can’t poop. She doesn’t know what’s working. And she feels horrible. And I don’t blame her.
You know, she’s obviously working with her doctor through it. But I just think there needs to be more education
definitely around what you’re doing. Everything in your book, right? I’m so happy you wrote that. I can’t wait to read
it because I know like this much. I don’t know much about hormones and the endocrine system, but it’s amazing. It’s
all connected.
It is. And I think to your point, like had you have gotten the mold and the pneumonia and whatnot when you were in
your 20s, it might have been a lot easier to get over because your liver wasn’t so focused also on the hormone
dysfunction you have going on or the metabolizing of your hormones. Because when we’re in perimenopause, it’s like
we make a bunch of hormones and then we don’t make any and we make a bunch and then we don’t make any. And
so our bodies just really confused. And then when we are making them, but not consistently our estrobolome gets out
of balance. And so now our digestion is off and now our bowel movements are off. And so then we get constipated.
And that further affects our bile flow and our lymphatic drainage. And our it’s just this big icky cycle. And to your
point, I think like that’s a good way to look at it. As adults, we need to adult better, especially women. We need to ask
questions. We need to not get medically gaslit. We need to expect better education about, you know, like, why aren’t
we talking to women about this in their 20s and 30s, like in their 20s? We need to be preparing them for pregnancy
and hormone shifts in their 30s.
We need to be preparing them for their perimenopause 40s and their 40s. We need to be preparing them for
menopause so that when you’re happening, when all this is happening to you. Also, I feel like people who haven’t
been prepared, it’s like a whole lot at once and everything shifts in the world just becomes really hard. And then it’s
like you go to one person and if you don’t get the right advice or answer, you’re just like, okay, it’s all in my head.
And then you just shut down and give up on yourself. And that’s why we have millions of women on SSRIs, millions of
women who are overweight, millions of people getting divorced because you’re just so overwhelmed by that point.
And you weren’t like planning on this, you know, you didn’t have any further education. And so it’s just very
unfortunate what happens to women as their health changes. Thankfully, it’s getting better. But to your point, as a
part of adulting, like it should be part of a class, like, hey, you, you need to understand what’s going to happen to
your body as these things start to happen and be prepared and just know, you know, not that everyone has to take
hormones, but at least know your options, know the risks and benefits.
Know that if you’re not doing these things we talked about, if you’re not pooping, if you’re not sleeping, if your bile
isn’t flowing, if you’re not sweating, you’re not going to do well with hormones, right? And it’s not the hormones
problem. It’s your body and the environment you put the hormone in. And truth be told, you probably didn’t do well
when your body was making hormones. You probably were the person that had a ton of PMS. You were the person
that had terrible periods. You were the person that was super moody and nobody liked one week out of the month.
And so the other problem is providers, doctors, patients. No one understands that. It’s not the hormone, it is the
environment you put the hormone in. And fixing that environment by making sure that you can poop and your bile is
flowing and your lymphatics are draining and you’re detoxing changes, the picture, changes the ballpark. And so I
think all of that just needs better enlightenment, better education. And we would have a lot happier women in the
world and men, because if we’re not happy.
Yeah. I mean, you need to fix your back. You need to fix your hormones and you need to be educated. And I mean, I
went through that process. I mean, exactly what you said. I’m still a little frustrated with where I’m at when it comes
to hormones, hormone replacements. I’ve seen a couple doctors. I’m not getting the education. It’s like a quick fix.
I’m putting a box with everyone else. I feel like, and I’ve seen three doctors now and it’s like, this is just the range I
want you to be in. And I’m trying to get answers. Like, what does that range mean? When we’re looking at my
testosterone, it looks pretty high to me. Well, that’s the range I like. Well, but by who? Who says that? You know, so I
just wish that there was more education and preparing for perimenopause. I don’t know how I got through it, but I got
through it. And now I’m actually on hormones and I’m in menopause. So, I mean, I imagine what the last ten years
could have looked like, probably a little more peaceful. You know, I had lots of complications. I started to get
constipated, I was bloated, so I think everything was just misfiring and I had no education. So I am all for this.
And you might not have gotten so sick, honestly, with the mold, because if you know, your body was able to detox
better and, and I also think when women feel really good and think about this, if you’re listening to this podcast,
women, most women, even when they don’t feel great all the time, they’ll tell you, I have 3 or 4 days a month that
I’m just like, I’m hitting it. All cylinders are firing. And like before I fixed my hormones, I knew right in my cycle it was
when I ovulated. Because all your hormones are the highest I knew there were like four days a month that I was
getting so much stuff done, and I would literally plan my life around it. Like, you know, I need to do all these things.
And then it was like the other parts of my cycle just sucked. And when you feel really good and you know, if that’s
just your baseline, when you started getting sick from that mold, you would have known something was wrong and
you probably wouldn’t have let it get to that point. Not that, you know, it’s just like sometimes I think as women,
we’re like, oh, well, this is just a part of how we’re supposed to feel. This is just a part of aging. This is because that’s
what doctors tell you. And that’s what we just, we think. And so that’s what I hate too, is like when you feel really
good, you should feel really good all the time. And when something’s wrong, you should know and it should be
addressed.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah. And I think that’s amazing. You have a coffee line now. You have an enema line. You test all this third party
tested. There’s no mold in it. You’re doing amazing things with lymphatic drainage and, and enemas and like, I want
to come to Scottsdale now, but.
You need.
To, I, I want you to tell everyone you know about you, where they can find you, what you’re doing, how we can
support you. And then I’m going to ask you the questions I ask everyone before we go.
Hey, terrific. You can find us if you’re in Scottsdale, Arizona. You can find us at Scottsdale hydrotherapy.com. You can
also follow us on Instagram. And anyone can purchase anything off of Trust Your gut.shop. And you can also follow us
on. Trust your gut.shop. And last but not least, you can follow me. Marina, the poop Fairy.
The poop fairy. It’s. It’s amazing. So if there’s one thing that somebody takes away from this podcast, what do you
think it is? Is it the drain eliminate flush method? Like what should somebody take away from this podcast?
Definitely opening up your drainage pathways before you do any type of cleanse or detoxing, make sure you’re
peeing, pooping, and sweating before you get on any type of cleanse.
I agree because I think it’s the easy, simple things that aren’t sexy that people don’t like to talk about, right? Like you
and I will sit here and talk about it. I love to talk to people about their poop. What does it look like? What is it? But
that’s not sexy. And it’s pretty easy. And it’s not like viral and doesn’t make you millions of dollars, but it’s what’s
needed to make people better. And so that’s the crappy world we live in now is it’s like how viral and, you know,
crazy. Can we make headlines and make people think they need to do a million things when in actuality, we need to
poop, they need to pee, they need to sweat, they need to eat. They need to move their body. They need to sleep.
And they need to be in a nontoxic environment, meaning what you’re breathing, what you’re drinking, what you’re
thinking. It’s pretty easy. And they need to see the sun.
Like, absolutely. I just think people are doing too much and it’s just starting to take a toll on their bodies. And I think
we just need to keep it simple. Exactly what we said, those 7 or 8 things. It’s beautiful.
Yeah. And also, you know, supplements are needed at certain points, especially if you’re deficient from gut or
whatever. But I do think people go overboard. And then I also think that usually supplements need to be on some sort
of rotation. I do think people need methylated B vitamins, vitamin D, iodine, you know, a few things, but you don’t
need a million of them to your point. And I think that when you’re taking all this excess stuff too, you have to
remember it gets processed by your liver. Your poor liver is like inundated in this country. If you’re drinking alcohol, if
we’re eating food that’s ultra processed, if we’re putting supplements in our body, if we’re putting stuff on our skin,
our clothes, I mean, our poor livers are just like, give me a break. You know, like they are. And everything you’re
talking about is actually helping our livers flow better. So this is the first thing that comes to your head. Don’t
overthink it. People love this first thing. What is one food that’s most beneficial and why?
I think meat I think protein. I think that’s super important. I think collagen like bone broth, like all of that is so good
for your gut lining and for gut health, I really do.
I love that.
What is one thing anyone listening to this podcast right now. Can do. That’s 100% free. That would improve their
health.
I would say drinking clean filtered water. I mean that’s going to help with constipation for sure. Kind of going back to
what you said. I mean, let’s keep it simple. I mean there’s so much stuff going on out there. Things are so expensive.
People are price gouging, just, you know, clean air, clean water, get sunshine walking, all of those things that’ll get
your lymphatic system moving, that’ll get your bowels moving, especially the clean water. That’s super important. So
some sort of attraction system just have some sort of filtration system. Start there.
Clean water. Clean air. So important. Last thing is, what is one thing you wish you would have known about your
health? We’ll say 20 years ago that you would have done differently now that you know what you know.
I think I worked really hard, like I was working 14 hours a day. And I mean, I was the girl that was double dipping. I
was a professor. I was doing all of the things. And I just think learning the art of really slowing down and giving
yourself a break, because I feel like it’s just this environment that’s go, go, go, go. And I think slow is better looking
back. And I wish I would have known that because I was, like I said, working probably 14 hours a day nonstop and I
didn’t get to travel as much as I’d like to and do all those other fun things. I didn’t have much of a life really. Like I
wasn’t dating, I wasn’t doing anything. I was just like, go, go, go. So looking back, that’s one thing I would say is, or
I’d tell someone is just to slow down, take a look at your schedule. It’s okay to kind of let your nervous system relax
and unwind. You have a social media break. Turn the phone off. My phone’s off every night at 6 p.m. it’s not going to
go back on until probably 7 a.m. because I have this morning routine, you know, the sauna, the cold plunge. I got this
whole routine. So and at night I had this whole routine to wind down. So I would say that.
I love that. Give yourself a break. Listen to your body. I think it’s the hardest thing to do as we get older because yes,
we just get in this go, go, go. And it’s the most needed thing. Honestly, like this morning is a prime example. I woke
up this morning at 515 because my alarm went off at 515 because I needed to exercise and do all the things before
my day started. I woke up at 515 this morning. I got up and took my thyroid medicine. I went to the bathroom and I
said to my husband, I am exhausted and my head hurts and I’ve got all these podcasts to do. And he looked at me
and said, well, why don’t you just go back to bed until 715? And I was like, I don’t know, why don’t I? And so I just got
myself right back in bed and I went to bed till 715. And I was like, I woke up in a completely different headspace. I
was like, this is amazing, I feel great. I didn’t exercise this morning. I do all these things that were on my list, but I felt
so good. And I’m like, yeah, why don’t I just listen to my body? Like, men are just easy, I guess. I don’t know, it just
looked at me like, well, just go back to bed for two hours. I was like, duh.
And you’re right. It really shifts your whole mindset and everything.
And my aura ring when I woke up this morning gave me like a 70 sleep score and it said, you have an hour and a half
sleep debt and all this crap. And I was like, what the heck? Because I even went to bed early last night. So I just went
back to sleep. And then when I woke up again at 715, it was like, your sleep score debt is zero and my sleep score
went up to like an 85. And I was like, so stupid. Like, yes, this was a great, you know, so it was like sleep or exercise.
Duh. You sleep because you just listen to yourself, right? But my brain was like, you should go exercise because
that’s what the world says we should do, right? And so it’s just silly how we like don’t. But as I’m getting older, I’m
better at listening to myself. Sometimes I need my husband to point out very obvious things. But I love that you said.
It’s not over. I mean, you can go for a swim, nice relaxing swim in the pool stretch, or you can go for a beautiful walk
with your husband. Like, you know, that’s getting exercise.
Correct. I had a ton of meetings this morning. I just walked on the treadmill. And then I’ll walk tonight before we go to
bed. And it’ll be fine because I actually exercised yesterday. And so I think we also get as women in this mindset of
like, oh, I must do this five days a week. I’ll still probably exercise and lift weights four days this week. I just needed
to rest this morning. Like I just, I just needed to and now I feel much better. So I think that’s a good point of just like
listening to yourself and taking a breath. And if you need to, you know, I guarantee you, my body got more out of
that extra hour and 45 minutes of sleep than any cardiovascular exercise could have done for me today.
So thank you for having me on. Thank you for letting me kind of spread the word, talking about opening up your
drainage pathways, talking about constipation, castor oil kits, coffee enemas, and all of the things. So I’m blessed and
grateful to be on and chatting with you about all this stuff.
Yes. Thank you so much for everything that you do and for your time. We’ll put all your stuff in the show notes so
