Blog/Transcription:

0:05 welcome back to this week’s episode of hormones metabolism in you I’m your host Dr Cassie Smith I’m a holistic

0:13 endocrinologist this week my goal was to bring you information on supplementation

0:19 around hormones I’m actually bringing back a returning guess I have Shawn Wells with me he is one of the best

0:26 supplement formulators in the world he appeared on my podcast back to the

0:31 basics on episode 28 that episode was called how to choose a safe supplement

0:36 and you guys loved that episode I got a ton of feedback on that episode where he explained to us how you can find safe

0:43 supplements and some of the risk of buying supplements on Amazon so I brought them on today because I really

0:48 wanted to focus on supplementation and things that we could do for Hormone Health so we talked a ton about side

0:57 effects symptoms things like that we talked talked about hot flashes and what supplements are good for hot flashes we

1:04 talked about in general stress because lots of people are stressed in the world now did a deep dive into adaptogens and

1:10 different things you can do for Stress Management he actually also talked about the gut microbiome and how that affects

1:16 your hormones and stress which my book goes over a lot as well that’s coming out we talked about cholesterol and how

1:24 hormones affect your cholesterol and different things you can do besides Statin therapy we did a deep dive into

1:29 into anxiety and depression and we talked about anxiety depression ADHD type symptoms a lot of women develop

1:36 this during menopause so what supplements can you take and what other things can you do besides being put on

1:42 ssris besides taking menzo diazines besides taking stimulants for ADHD

1:48 things like that so we did a deep dive into that he talked about sleep and how important that is with hormones which we

1:53 talk about on this podcast a lot so then I asked him what are some of the best supplements for sleep and so we talked a

1:59 lot about that about libido as well because this is an issue that men and women both face and so we talked about

2:07 that and so there are lots of good questions just around hormones that we discussed but then we threw some basic

2:13 things in there like sleep and you know nutrition stress things like that now

2:20 this podcast at the beginning we got it on like a very interesting topic and I

2:25 was going to cut it out of the podcast but I really liked it so I left it we started talking about the seasons like

2:32 the four seasons of hormones and like how Perry menopause menopause and then

2:38 you know just cycling women how those are kind of different seasons of your life and so he explains a lot of that he

2:45 talked also about you know your menstrual phase your ovulatory phase your follicular and ludal phase how

2:50 these are different cycles and each one have a different superow he calls it and we need to be aware of how we feel in

2:56 each cycle and how to listen to our body and how to know what to do in those cycles and some of the things we can do

3:03 from a supplement standpoint and a sleep and a nutrition standpoint so I thought that was really neat and he also pointed

3:09 out how this world is really complicated but how men and women are very different now that seems easy right like men and

3:15 women they’re not the same but he points out how Society tries to force women into this box and tries to force women

3:21 to be like men they try to force women to work like men to act like men to eat like men to fast like men to exercise

3:28 like men a lot of medical studies are done on men and it that that data is extrapolated to women and so we did this

3:35 whole conversation about how women are not men we are a little more complicated

3:40 but that’s because we have these amazing hormones and this ability to grow a life in us and to feed a life from our body

3:48 and so we are different and so we went into a conversation about that as well which I thought was very powerful and

3:54 very just a lot of good information for women so that we’re not so hard on ourselves and so that we are more

4:00 understanding when he explains how our hormones regulate and how they’re cycling and how we are just different

4:06 than men so I hope that you that you really enjoyed this episode as much as I

4:11 enjoyed doing it and I loved having Sean back so here we go and today we’re going to be focusing on the symptoms the

5:57 Instagram and all sorts of social media platforms Ms so tell us a little brief

6:03 synopsis like what have you been doing I guess over the last 20 years and what are you most excited about that you’re

6:09 doing now wow well I’ve been formulating supplements I used to be a chief

6:14 clinical dietition working in skilled nursing facilities and acute care since

6:21 about 20 years is is uh how long I’ve been formulating there was some

6:26 crossover there uh and as you stay I’ve been uh patenting unique ingredients

6:32 formulating supplements writing books speaking all over the world doing documentaries all

6:39 that kind of stuff and um it’s been amazing making friends like you yeah and

6:46 we were just talking before this how you were at a4m which is one of the biggest I think the biggest biohacking

6:52 functional medicine conference in the world every year and so you were speaking there which I thought was awesome you did a great job oh thank you

6:59 so yeah what are do you have anything in particular you’re working on currently or you’re excited about currently in the

7:06 field or the realm of like menopause Women’s Health mental health it’s a big

7:11 Focus uh for sure I am uh I formulated a supplement for the famous influencer

7:19 Aggie at Aggie uh she has well over a million followers on Instagram Alone um that is

7:28 really for uh I would say premenopause but for kind

7:34 of regularity um reducing uh menstrual cramps um and and negative menstrual

7:42 symptoms I like looking at all four of the phases as four

7:49 seasons and instead of you know one of the things that was a big shift in my

7:55 mind is instead of looking at these things as a big negative or frustration

8:02 oh I’m a woman and I have to go through uh menstration for x amount of years I

8:08 look at it as a superpower um you know women have

8:14 intuition they have this ability to uh

8:19 obviously be fertile enough to grow another human being to create

8:26 Humanity like if I stop and think on that that is incredibly powerful no

8:33 matter if you’re going to have a child or not you have the ability to create

8:38 inside your body inside your womb to create another human being and then maintain that human being through the

8:46 nutrition from your breast and I think this is why like you

8:52 know we whenever we talk about creation we talk about this uh feminine

8:58 energy and so that’s very powerful and this ability to be fertile cleanse

9:08 reset um that’s just it’s it’s amazing and it’s one of the reasons that uh

9:14 women actually live longer is the the ability to shed iron unlike men um you

9:21 know men tend to build up toxic iron Stores um so I look at these things and

9:27 if you look at the four different phases the luteal menstrual uh follicular um

9:34 ovulatory you actually see that each phase has different

9:40 superpowers where you’re more extroverted where testosterone is higher where intuition is higher where you’re

9:47 more introverted and and need to kind of um take time to have self-care and just

9:53 being aware of these four different phases instead of powering through like you’re a man

9:59 I think is really important and I think there’s going to be a huge shift when we

10:04 start looking at things accordingly and say okay this is the phase you in now

10:10 here’s how you should train here’s how you should work here’s how you should connect to others here’s the food you

10:15 should eat here’s the supplements that you should take and instead of again looking

10:23 at these as a as a frustration or a weakness if you’re looking at the world

10:28 through masculine eyes it would be a weakness that you can’t be as masculine

10:34 but if you look at things as as through feminine eyes now these are superpowers

10:40 and you just need to know how to hone them and be more aware of them and the

10:45 same is true um you know when you’re talking about pre Perry and

10:51 postmenopausal too they’re just Seasons they’re phases and there superpowers in

10:57 all of them so for me me there’s a shift that I believe is going to

11:04 happen and uh maybe it’s the woo side of me that you know I believe that we’re heading into this is going to get kind

11:10 of woo for a second I’ve done psychedelics and so you know I believe that we’re heading into something called

11:16 The Age of Aquarius or the the kind of Christ Consciousness like a a new

11:23 era of a real shift towards like what’s been dominated by masculinity

11:30 I think is going to move into an era of of maybe a

11:36 rebalancing uh with feminine energy um where they’re truly balanced kind of

11:41 like yin and yang I think we’re we’re coming into that era and I think you’re seeing uh more studies happen uh with

11:50 women I know they’re they’re lacking and they’re certainly more expensive a little bit more complicated but you’re

11:56 seeing uh studies and a desire to to have those studies um a real impetus for

12:03 that so um I don’t know that that’s just some thoughts around like uh you know

12:09 women in medicine in health care in research and the kind of Shifting of

12:16 that Paradigm so women were a little more expensive and a little more complicated

12:22 but were worth it is what I heard I agree yeah 100% th% yeah because without

12:28 us nobody’s having any babies so th% yes agree yeah no I couldn’t agree with you

12:35 more actually I think it’s uh you make really good points I think there’s a lot of women out there who are very driven

12:42 and when you put them in an arena the world you know they’re just go go go go

12:48 go and you make a good point like our body we have different cycles and so we have this powerful three four days of

12:54 our cycle where our estrogen’s high our testosterone’s high and our progesterone’s high and I say all the time that if you put women in a room for

13:02 those 72 hours that were all in their ovulatory phase of their cycle they could solve all the world’s problems

13:07 like be done um it used to be called The Red Tent like uh with Native Americans

13:13 where people would go get wisdom from women that were Elders that were I say

13:19 Elders they were still menting but they were certainly more experienced and um and they would go

13:26 into The Red Tent to get to get advice place to get wisdom no it’s true and

13:32 then you know everyone’s a little different but there are certain parts of your cycle you know when your progesterone’s high like you said and

13:38 it’s just like you need more self-care time you need just more you know less

13:44 stress and so when you try to put more stress on yourself in that time it doesn’t go well and so this actually

13:50 happened to me recently so I’m writing a book right now and I have this timeline

13:56 is but I’m kind of putting it on myself and so this last week actually like I had all these meetings set up CU I was

14:02 going to finish writing this book and it’s not a good week for me I’m I’m in my moodal phase like I need to be

14:08 resting and need to be sleeping and I’m just tired and we just got back from Vegas and it just it went so bad on

14:14 Monday like so so so bad I was almost in tears and I like cuz I can’t do anything

14:19 halfway I have to do everything amazing and and they’re like no it’s going okay I’m like it’s going okay but it’s not

14:25 going like what I want to come out is not coming out just it wasn’t fabulous and so on Tuesday we were supposed to

14:31 meet and I was like I’m done like we’re not doing it this week so we didn’t meet Tuesday we didn’t meet today I think I made everyone mad I don’t care um we’re

14:38 going to meet in two weeks whenever I’m back in my like powerful face I’m gonna just take a

14:44 minute this is going to get into a deeper conversation but like I feel like

14:49 and we can get into the supplements but I do feel like because we’re in a masculinized world like and I don’t mean

14:56 that as a negative for for men I’m all for like healthy um Divine

15:02 masculinity um holding space being protectors providers but men are kind of

15:09 straightforward thinkers The Logical thinkers and we’re driven by kpis and

15:14 and we’re competitive we’re built to be competitive you know it’s it’s survival

15:19 of the fittest it’s all that kind of stuff and that’s not how women are built and we’re forcing women to work these

15:26 work weeks like their men we’re forcing women who eat like their men fast like their men operate like their

15:33 men and and we even getting studies like their men we’re getting you know

15:38 research and supplements and medications like they’re men they’re not men like

15:45 you know and women shouldn’t be men like it’s just it’s uh we’re we’re two

15:52 different energies and we’re both equal but different and we’re

15:57 complimentary it is the yin and yang it is the the balance when brought together

16:04 yeah no it’s true and the more you fight it like I tried to fight it Monday because Sunday everyone was like we’re

16:09 doing it we’re doing it and it was just it was so bad like I know what I’m capable of it was so bad like I was

16:16 almost in tears and I was just like and then they said oh it’s a it’s fine we’ll just try again tomorrow and I was like

16:22 we’re not trying again tomorrow like I’m going to sleep tonight and I’m going to sleep in tomorrow and we’re not trying

16:27 tomorrow so um yeah one last thing just I mean just think about you know the

16:33 lunar cycle you 28 days of the cycle and this is

16:38 like spiritual it’s Cosmic that you’re like attached to tides that you’re

16:44 attached to gravity that you’re attached to uh planetary

16:50 movement and then women sinking up with

16:55 their menstrual cycles and circadian rhythms to to some there is like some

17:00 fertility sync there that’s like evolutionary um and and we’re just

17:06 denying all of this in a way that doesn’t make sense like we’re we’re we’re trying to again operate in a in a

17:14 masculine environment as women and that does not make make sense that will not

17:19 work long term um you’re going to hit a wall it’s going to be frustrating you’re going to

17:25 burn out women need to be creative need

17:30 to be intuitive need to be uh self-care and nourishing for themselves and for

17:38 their their home or their their nest if you will and that’s what that’s what women

17:44 are are built for um they’re not built for the environment we’re

17:50 creating yeah no I agree that’s uh that’s a good point so and I think

17:56 that’s what drives a lot of the anxiety and stress and ADHD type symptoms that

18:01 women think they have or get diagnosed with because it’s this lack of self-care this lack of selfawareness this Lack of

18:07 self like listening to your body right like as I get older and my intuition just gets better I three years ago if

18:14 there would have been a bunch of people on a phone call that said no we’re doing this tomorrow we’re going to do it again I would have went home I would have

18:20 cried I would have stayed up all night I would have tried again I was like nope I’m done I’ll get back to you when I feel better you know like nope it’s not

18:27 happening um because if you don’t do that like you said then you end up very anxious you end up very depressed you

18:33 end up like it just it doesn’t work and so I think that’s where a lot of these symptoms come from especially with women

18:39 now when you have hormone shifting that is Shifting or not shifting how it’s

18:44 supposed to or whatnot because you are stressed your insulin’s high your cortisol’s high it affects your

18:49 progesterone and estrogen I think that makes it worse I think there’s also a lot of women going through menopause or

18:55 per menopausal at much younger ages I see that all the time because of this chronic stress too so I think there’s a

19:02 lot of Lifestyle things which is what I’m working on in this book actually talking about and your how your gut

19:07 plays a role in all this as well it’s very interesting how much stress affects your gut and what it does to your

19:13 hormones um I think that’s what causes a lot of this right so what I mean I guess talk to me about

19:21 we’re going to leave out Life Style and all that we’re going to just kind of focus on supplements what supplements

19:27 can people take to help with some of these things with symptoms as they transition through you know and from per

19:33 menopause to menopause for like hot flashes for insomnia and then we can focus on the mental aspect of

19:41 it right so first and foremost when I’m thinking of my book is

19:48 the energy formula and I talk about resilience I talk about alistic load

19:54 alistic capacity that’s the size of your stress bucket I even mention terms like

20:00 uh being fragile or antifragile being harder to kill is kind of the masculinized version of it but it means

20:06 that you are resilient you can take on stress you have the capacity to take on

20:13 new or extra stress if your stress bucket has extra room in it because of

20:19 hormesis because of you taking on stress from time to time you can grow your

20:26 bucket when we’re chronically stressed really bad when we’re occasionally

20:32 stressed really good because not being stressed means that your stress bucket

20:38 will stay small that you will be very weak and easy to kill same on the other

20:43 side when we’re chronically stressed doesn’t matter how big the stress bucket is it’s

20:48 overflowing you can’t take on new stress easy to kill so what we want is to have

20:55 periods of ease and periods of unease and then we can avoid

21:02 disease so ideally where I like to start is

21:09 adaptogens this is going to bring you into balance speaking of Yin and young

21:15 masculine and feminine we’re talking about balance so it’s going to create more resilience if you’re low in blood

21:22 pressure high in blood pressure low in blood sugar high in blood sugar if you are uh low intestin testosterone high in

21:29 testosterone Etc it’s going to bring you into balance this is going to create a

21:34 greater resilience a greater centeredness a greater capacity to take on mental or physical stress so things

21:42 like ash Wanda riola Maca Jin sing Etc

21:47 these are going to be uh amazing when it comes to having greater resilience I

21:53 like to use one for a month and then cycle to another one and then cycle to another one I don’t like to chronically

22:00 stay on the adaptogens they each work a little bit differently uh but they’re all working on that same concept of

22:07 bringing you into balance okay so adaptogens are one to

22:15 just kind of help in general with stress talk to me about and by the way

22:20 most people are stressed uh I look at stress markers all day yeah I look at

22:26 cortisol levels I look at ESR s and CRPS yeah oh my goodness I look at

22:32 insulin levels and it is difficult to find people who aren’t stressed I saw an 18-year-old yesterday

22:39 an 18-year-old boy whose CRP is more than 20 and his insulin is

22:45 88 and his cortisol was like 20 something and I was just like what life

22:51 are you living like well this works both ways as I was saying like this is kind

22:57 of like the idea of like that uh honic scale like with u with pain right when you’re when you’re in the hospital or

23:03 nursing home like you have like this scale of pain and you have like the happy face on one end and the smiley or

23:10 the sad face on the other and you know but basically pain is variable person to

23:15 person right it’s it’s um it’s it’s not like uh pain translates like from me to

23:22 you maybe I can experience more maybe the type of pain is is that I can experience is greater but you can

23:28 experience different types of pain greater so it’s variable right so it’s

23:33 the same when we talk about this stress and what you can take on because like

23:39 what you’re saying also is that if that stress bucket is small if they’re metabolically

23:46 dysfunctional already right 93% of the population is

23:52 metabolically dysfunctional which also means that they’re mitochondrially dysfunctional which also means that

23:57 they’re in States of insufficient cellular energy which is called ice an acronym which also means that they don’t

24:04 have enough ATP to run the system which also means that you’re going to run into

24:10 elevated insulin elevated blood sugar elevated uh um inflammation

24:18 oxidation uh faster biological aging shorten telr less ceru and Gene

24:25 activation on and on and on the whole system is like overwhelmed because

24:30 there’s not enough mitochondria and the ones that are there are not functioning optimally and this actually happens both

24:38 ways too from blood sugar being too high and then it’s creating more inflammation oh there’s more inflammation it’s

24:43 creating more blood sugar oh like you have more stress but you don’t have enough physiologic bandwidth to deal

24:49 with that stress oh that’s creating higher insulin and cortisol that higher insulin and cortisol is creating more

24:54 inflammation uhoh like your testosterone is down because the orol is so high and that ratio is very poor so now you can’t

25:02 uh have sex like you want to so now you can’t connect now you have shame around that that creates more cortisol that

25:08 creates more inflammation like this is like the this spiral and then you add in seed oils and

25:15 you know uh high glycemic foods and all of this stuff and it’s certainly exposure to um

25:22 metalloestrogens phytoestrogens um you know all of these

25:28 endocrine disruptors and those are throughout our

25:33 environment uh so much so now that they call them like nmps with the Nano

25:40 microplastics like that we’re getting exposed to that we’re seeing in the brain in the penis in the ovaries like

25:47 throughout our tissues we’re seeing them in icebergs we’re seeing them down in Caverns we’re seeing them up in clouds

25:52 30,000 ft up we’re seeing we’re seeing them at the bottom of the ocean like in

25:59 the marana’s trench and stuff we’re seeing micr Plastics and nanoplastics

26:04 everywhere and these are having a massive impact on us as well so um you

26:10 know this is like this whole thing that’s happening in our exposure to emfs and blue light and our disrupted

26:17 circadian rhythm that we’re trying to override and we can’t get to sleep I mean this is all leading to all

26:24 of this like and we’re seeing you know all of this happen at at like record rates autism ADHD like cancer like all

26:32 at record rates yeah and then your gut makes it worse too right so those seed oils and

26:38 everything you know I look at gut studies all day people have leaky gut so then as soon as your gut starts leaking

26:44 then all those lipo you know polysaccharides and everything that you’re eating in the red 40s leaking out of your gut and then that’s giving a

26:51 feedback to your brain and your body that something’s wrong so then interlukin six is released and tissue

26:56 neosis Factor Alpha and then there’s more inflammation and then your cortisol is higher and then your insulin’s higher

27:03 and then people are like why am I walking around with a big gut and why can’t I lose weight well because your body and there’s leaky brain now too I

27:09 mean that’s yeah yeah and stress you know your Vegas nerve you know this I have a whole chapter on this in my book

27:16 like your Vagas nerve is so important for digestion and so if you just walk around chronically stressed you’re not

27:22 digesting so you’re constipated you’re not releasing secretions in your GI tract so you’re not digesting your fat I

27:29 mean there’s so many things that play into your gut as well just from stress

27:34 and so you know it’s just it’s it’s really sad how many people walk around

27:40 with all of these symptoms especially you know depression anxiety but what really infuriates me is then they get

27:46 put on these medications with all these side effects right like ssris and you do not have an SSRI defect there is not a

27:54 amilf or you know Prozac defect that does not exist okay there’s a problem

28:00 here that we need to figure out what it is and especially when you’re transitioning through menopause like that’s why I’m so passionate about this

28:06 and we’re doing the summit I see so many people who are pery menopausal or becoming menopausal they go tell a

28:13 doctor hey I’m you know I feel depressed and I’m tired and I you know I’m having hot flashes and my breasts are tender

28:18 and they give them all these symptoms and the doctor doesn’t know what to do they don’t know what to do so they

28:25 confuse I don’t know what to do with here’s a pill to make you shut up and

28:30 it’s frustrating because those pills have more side effects and oh by the way I have a chapter in my book too that

28:36 talks about how all these medicines we give people also affect their gut and make it worse you know and so it’s like

28:43 I don’t know well women have been told that they’re rational for a long time and you know often a treatment this is

28:50 barbaric was removing your reproductive organs as a result uh This was done like

28:58 throughout history it was a cure for irrationality of

29:03 women was to do these hysterectomies also like the word lunacy

29:09 comes from being affected by the moon and like women were considered crazy as

29:15 well there’s I mean this is all throughout like medical history so this is where the Paradigm is

29:22 Shifting and we do need uh female medical doctors and and uh and female

29:28 researchers and female dietitians and and female Pharmacists and you know

29:34 people that are all stepping up across the board um I’m yeah I’m so glad that

29:40 you’re you’re bringing this uh to attention and I totally agree about the the gut

29:46 microbiome and the hollow bant in general which is the the hollow biome is

29:52 is is kind of like this six-foot orb around you and how you’re Interac acting

29:58 in space with the microbiomes of everything else if you if you imagine um

30:03 Charlie Brown and like pigpen do you remember that character with like that dust cloud around them yeah that is your

30:11 your microbiome and it’s like interacting and speaking they actually outnumber your cells 10 to one and they

30:19 communicate on a very uh Primal level like that you don’t understand fully

30:26 similar to like um um you know all like there’s there’s

30:31 like deep levels of communication even electrically that we’re not even aware

30:36 of we’re just starting to become aware of you know um there’s all kinds of communication that happens before you

30:43 open your mouth and this is all a part of survival and you know whether you’re

30:48 safe or not whether you know they’ve done studies on like women smelling a man’s clothes and they can like tell

30:55 whether he’s like fertile or or like you know ideal in terms of a mate or

31:01 not um they can tell if uh he was just afraid of something and in fear or not

31:08 just from smelling clothes um so you know there’s there’s a lot going on in terms of our microbiome

31:16 that we have yet to even discover so what supplements can women

31:23 take to help their hormones let’s focus on that like what do you recommend for hormones whether it be like painful

31:31 Menses or you know transitioning into menopause hot flashes and then I want to talk about anxiety depression once

31:38 because I know you you have a lot of of good tips for that right right so I mean

31:43 there are there is hormone replacement therapy of which prior to

31:48 maybe I always recommend working with someone like you getting the data getting a baseline understanding where

31:54 you’re where you’re at and where you’re trying to go but you can potentially at

31:59 least use um progesterone use DHEA uh use melatonin use vitamin D

32:07 these are hormones that you do have access to over the counter uh you know beyond that you know you can look at

32:14 testosterone estradi um Etc and um and

32:20 you know again working with with someone like you if that’s a path that you want to go down with with bioidentical

32:26 hormones um you know Dr Amy Kellan is a friend of mine and she’s a big advocate

32:32 of these things and and often talks about how that research is very misunderstood Often by uh male doctors

32:39 on how these things are you know potentially harmful and going to grow cancer and all of these kinds of things

32:47 um but beyond that as far as supplements um I do see a lot of value

32:55 where the there’s two big things that I always see like almost all human beings are deficient and these are going to be

33:01 really important for immunity blood sugar and um and stress is going to be

33:09 Magnesium number one and vitamin D3 is the other I probably see 70 to 80% of

33:15 the population deficient in those certainly from an optimized standpoint

33:20 You could argue 95% plus of the population is is not an ideal standpoint

33:27 defici it’s over 70% for both um so those are going to be

33:33 important to be on uh you will watch like a a woman like if especially a

33:38 woman with magnesium massive like you’ll see improved sleep improved bowel

33:45 movements improved brain function improved blood sugar improved immunity improved resistance to

33:52 fractures uh improve muscle contraction I mean it just goes down the

33:57 line with magnesium um do you need to be on a variety of different

34:02 forms not necessarily um there are some minor benefits of these different forms

34:09 over the other but it’s really from that salt that it’s connected to that’s going to give it a little bit more extra so

34:17 like magnesium malate might help with um you know pain and and and muscle

34:24 aches uh magnesium oxide or carbonate might be better for bowel movements uh

34:30 magnesium 3 and8 might be a little bit better for uh brain function but ultimately just getting

34:39 enough magnesium is very important one of my favorite forms it’s a great price

34:44 that’s highly bioavailable is magnesium glycinate it’s probably the the best bang for the

34:50 buck um and again like if sleep is an issue and a lot of women are not

34:55 sleeping appropriately because they have kids because they’re the matriarch of

35:00 the home because they’re working crazy work hours and because they’re not

35:06 acknowledging their menstrual cycle or or what have you and it’s just so much um you know then then they’re just

35:13 not getting enough sleep magnesium can help tremendously not only with sleep but with stress going back to that idea

35:20 of the stress that we’re putting on the body and don’t think stress just means like ah stress like stress in phys

35:27 theology means uh there’s a like something that’s difficult for

35:34 your body to take on so the stress can be you working out stress can be fasting

35:40 stress can be yes it could be mental uh could be you know losing your job someone breaking up with you what have

35:47 you but there’s a lot of stress and stress isn’t always a negative again

35:53 stress can be a good stress a you stress EU stress um um and that helps us grow

35:59 stronger it’s just chronic stress that’s the issue and so immunity is a big issue if your immune function is compromised

36:06 and a lot of people have uh immune function that’s compromised I like looking at some of those things as well

36:13 I know you probably see that a lot but again you know it’s like kind of which

36:18 side of this is all coming from like the body is falling apart and like we’re seeing a lot of different things we’re

36:23 seeing that stress high blood sugar I don’t have enough energy the immune fun is you know it’s like where is it um but

36:31 you can address like each of those parts and at least get some things under control and then you can figure out your

36:37 epigenetics your gut microbiome like what if we try this hormone um you know

36:42 things like that but I going back to what I was saying earlier vitamin D3 36:48 incredible as well we used to think that was related to fractures but now we understand it’s more of a hormone and

36:54 truly there’s this whole endocrine you could speak that you’re the endocrine lady there’s an endocrine Cascade and I

37:01 think people don’t appreciate that like they think of these hormones like as um they’re in a vacuum but really like

37:09 there’s there’s U they’re reversible and they’re affecting each other and it’s it’s this beautiful homeostasis that’s

37:16 taking place again kind of going back to that yin and yang from God or Creator or

37:22 source and that Cascade is something that you need to be aware of too and

37:28 having an expert in the endocrine system is going to be helpful because when you

37:33 kind of reduce one or increase the other it can it can have a number of effects but we do see vitamin D3 in particular

37:41 very low because we’re not uh exposing our skin like we used to right we have

37:48 like we’re all like clothed especially if you’re in Northern climate especially if your darker skin in particular black

37:56 skin you’re not going to get enough vitamin D3 if you’re in Northern climates you

38:02 need more sun exposure if you’re black you need more sun exposure so you know there’s most of the

38:08 people in the world are not getting Sun period and then they’re also in Northern

38:14 climates they may also be black or darker skinned persons of color and they’re most certainly not getting

38:20 enough vitamin D3 again like it’s it’s pretty much at a pandemic level and

38:26 speaking of which with covid if we got more vitamin D3 that could have had a massive

38:32 impact yeah and D3 deficiency can affect your mood as well so yeah I completely

38:38 agree with that I you know I’ve told people this I diagnose thyroid cancer I do biopsies needle biopsies on thyroids

38:45 so I have an ultrasound machine and I mean that’s something I learned in Fellowship so I still do it just for my

38:51 patients they don’t have to go somewhere else I’ve diagnosed now 100 people with thyroid cancer in 8 years with needle bi

38:57 biopsies 100% of the 100 people have had vitamin D levels of 20 or

39:03 less that says something right so like whenever I do a biopsy I can usually kind of tell by the way it feels and so

39:10 I have a thing with my staff when I do a biopsy and I give it to them and I’m like um what’s their vitamin D they

39:17 usually know and they’re like oh yeah sad I’m like okay well just make him an appointment on Friday because we’re

39:22 going to talk about it like I mean it’s just it’s pretty and there’s a study that shows when your vitamin D is less

39:28 than 20 your monocytes and macrophases don’t work which are the cells in your immune system that help fight cancer and

39:35 your 16% more likely to develop cancer with the vitamin D of 20 or less so it’s

39:40 I mean yes it affects your immune system but it also affects a lot of other things unfor and I can get into like

39:46 things like um evening primrose oil or borage oil or D Quai or some of these

39:52 things that I do think have value but I also think like some of the Bas Basics like are being missed and the reduction

40:01 in stress like another one is the methylated B vitamins I think women are

40:07 are often anemic um you know just thinking oh it’s iron because you know

40:13 uh sluffing blood and and um shedding blood and I’m not you know not getting

40:20 enough iron and that is true to some degree but there’s also full weight and b12 uh up to 40% % of the population has

40:29 an MTHFR um dysfunction where you know they’re not converting um folate to five

40:37 methyl tetrahydrofolate optimally the ideal form of folate the active form the coenzymated form and they might be poor

40:46 methylators on top of it and so they’re not converting like even you know

40:52 supplemental or food-based Beach well uh hydroxycobalamin

40:57 or cyano cobalamin over to methyl cobalamin or things like this so that

41:03 can lead to anemia that can lead to fatigue um certainly the B vitamins have

41:09 a ton of data around stress and resilience as well and Immunity in particular

41:15 B6 yeah so if you had to pick one supplement that you think would be best

41:20 for sleep in general somebody who’s having menopausal issues supplement what would it be

41:27 magnesium would be the the foundation magnesium V6 would be the foundation then I would get into uh melatone and

41:35 you know some of the Low Dose I know that’s controversial but I would do low dose

41:41 because um the reason I would say this unless you’re wearing like blue light blocking glasses and like not eating in

41:48 the evening and doing all these things that are counter to our circadian rhythm and counter to our Evolution our

41:54 physiology which we are we’re eating late we’re getting all this blue light we’re getting exposed to devices TVs

42:01 cell phones iPads whatever that’s blocking melatonin so

42:06 people are like oh like you know your exogenous melatonin is going to compete with your Endo like yes and no one’s

42:15 making enough melatonin as far as I can see so um I do think using a lowd dose

42:22 melatonin can be helpful if you haven’t explored all of the ways to reduce blue light and and optimize your circadian

42:29 rhythm Dr Sachin Panda’s data is amazing around that what about pregn alone do

42:34 you ever recommend that so your body can make your own I do I recommend it uh

42:40 like exogenous pregnanolone yeah com yeah yeah I I do I always think it’s

42:48 ideal to replace something short term until like you can kind of get

42:55 things under control and then like then we can like seek out like kind of more

43:00 holistic approaches of like you know ridding yourself of all these toxic

43:07 cleaners and shampoos and and reducing EMF exposure and reducing blue light

43:13 exposure and eating an optimal diet without seed oils and and you know high

43:18 glycemic foods and getting to bed on time and you know getting enough sex in your life uh you know all these things

43:25 by the way that has some of the most powerful data unbelievable doctors never talk about it it’s insane its effect on

43:31 the immune system on happiness on longevity on resistance to diseases like

43:39 just having intimate sex with an ideal partner profound

43:44 impact um but that’s you know I do believe in in supplementing with these

43:51 things until until you can kind of like it’s kind of like a like let’s get the fire under control and then we can start

43:59 you know building the building right it’s that kind of thing so I have find

44:05 sometimes people tell me like melatonin gives them a headache you know or they have like this rebound headache in the morning so that’s where I use a lot of

44:11 pregn Alone um people like that what about hot flashes if you had to pick one

44:17 thing if somebody’s struggling with hot flashes and they don’t want to do estrogen for whatever reason because

44:22 they haven’t listened to all my podcasts that tell you the million reasons you should take estrogen what would what

44:28 would you recommend for those people well it would be those two things that I mentioned actually before like it’s a

44:33 high GLA Source uh it’s that Gamlin like acid so that’s from borage oil or uh

44:39 evening primrose oil okay um and then also uh D Quai is a really good uh herb

44:46 that’s been shown to be very effective on that front is that for Ed Too rectile

44:52 dis you know yes there it does have an

44:58 adaptogenic effect it seems to be like put in this female box but uh kind of

45:03 like Maca like for libido um which is an adaptogen it’s like put in this like

45:09 masculine box but Maca is very effective for both genders you know this goes back to the idea of like we think of erectile

45:17 dysfunction as a male thing but it’s really a um both genders right like it’s

45:23 blood flow to the phus so it’s the clitoris or the penis with pd5 45:29 inhibition is the mechanism but that’s important for men and women for women

45:35 it’s going to be sensation orgasm wetness Etc the ability to be intimate

45:41 and enjoy it and for men it’s just a little more obvious when they’re not

45:47 getting enough blood flow because you can’t even perform period let alone it’s you know for a woman it can

45:53 be you know she may be too dry she may not get enjoyment out of it um you know

46:00 there may be some pain associated with those kinds of things but with men they can’t even perform period and then

46:06 obviously on both sides there’s embarrassment and shame around that so you know blood flow is an extremely

46:12 important factor and so increasing nitric oxide uh is going to be important

46:19 there uh and by the way speaking of microbiome the oral microbiome you’re

46:24 killing it if you’re using mouthwash alcoholic mouthwash you’re killing your

46:30 entire oral microbiome which is killing your ability to make nit nitric oxide so

46:35 if you have trouble as a woman or a man getting enough blood flow um you have to get rid of the

46:43 Listerine the scope all that kind of stuff yeah what about so let’s

46:49 transition to anxiety depression a lot of that that you get as you transition

46:55 into menopause now a lot of that is lack of hormone so I agree with you it’s really important to find a provider that

47:00 understands hormones because you can fix a lot of this with hormones I take people off of ssris and anxiety medicine

47:06 every day that is like one of the happiest things that I do I take people off statins and I take people off ssris

47:13 and I take them off of sleeping medicine trazodone all these things um just real quick that those are all

47:21 criminal things uh the cholesterol myth is disgusting to me it is uh the higher

47:27 the cholesterol the longer the longevity there are tribes like obesos that have cholesterols in the 600s and zero

47:34 incidence of heart attack yeah there’s a there’s a meta analyses

47:40 from 2017 2022 both meta analyses showed that uh they cause more harm than good

47:47 and we shouldn’t be using them especially in women so this is what really fires me up Sean there’s no

47:53 studies in women zero studies in women for cholester are for stattin right so

47:59 but they extrapolate the data from men onto women we are not the same people number one number two there’s actually

48:06 the Seattle there’s a Seattle study that showed that women that have been on statins for 10 years or longer over the

48:12 age of 50 have a 90% 92 to be exact perc chance of

48:18 developing breast cancer compared to the general population of about one and four so it’s giving women breast cancer um

48:26 according to that study and you’re putting women on it with zero data because how many women out there are on

48:31 it for secondary prevention um and then that’s been extrapolated from a man primary prevention data has been

48:38 extrapolated from a man let’s use our brain and actually check A lipoprotein a this is my favorite thing to do I saw a

48:44 woman today right her LDL was like 135 so her primary care doctor puts her on a

48:50 stat and and never checks it again and never takes her off of it I check her LDL 35 Jesus Christ her poor brain and

48:57 her lipoprotein a is less than 10 okay and her triglycerides are like 70 like I

49:02 don’t give a what your LVL is like I don’t care 200 you’re not going to get sticky particles that are it just it

49:09 makes me so mad yeah LL is not the bad cholesterol that is a complete myth um I agree with you on lipoprotein a being

49:16 the best cardiovascular health measure uh it’s all it’s very frustrating um and you

49:24 know if you think about what what is a Statin going to do that lowers

49:29 cholesterol and again cholesterol is what’s protective to you cardiovascularly but also the lipid by

49:38 layer around the cell every cell in your body is made of cholesterol every sex

49:43 hormone is going to yes your brain is largely cholesterol you’re all these sex hormones that you’re interested in

49:49 testosterone beta estradi estrone progesterone DHE they’re all cholesterol

49:55 based so of course you’re going to lower testosterone lower estrogen it’s it’s stupid and then also

50:03 you’re lowering uh Co CoQ10 and then that’s why you’re getting these muscle cramps and you’re getting mitochondrial

50:09 dysfunction you’re not making enough cellular energy it’s all a giant scam

50:15 it’s very upsetting it’s it is and the reason women are getting heart disease is because they don’t have estrogen not

50:21 because they don’t have statins there’s not a Statin deficiency causing this there’s an estrogen deficiency and so I

50:28 pride myself in trying to take people off medicine every day like that’s what I do a lot of people look at me like I’m crazy eventually they’re like maybe

50:34 she’s not um but I love taking people off ssris as well and like trazadone

50:40 sleeping medicine things like that like that stuff is all garbage so that was the last one I’m gonna mention and then

50:45 I’ll get into some supplements is benzo almost killed me Cassie benzo I was I’ve

50:51 I’ve struggled my whole life because I was in sympathetic nervous system that could be a whole discussion on its own

50:58 and I think a lot of people are stuck in sympathetic this gets back to balance of parasympathetic sympathetic autonomic

51:03 nervous system like rest and digest fight flight or freeze I was uh because of trauma abuse

51:11 all these things I was stuck in sympathetic I didn’t know how to relax um and I had to use uh Lunesta

51:19 ambient Xanax all these things to even try and fall asleep became deeply

51:24 addicted to him had unbelievable fear about not having them and like I

51:31 literally would sleep less than 30 minutes in a night if I didn’t have them or I ran out but then my sleep over time

51:38 became highly apnic and just like a zombie type of uh

51:45 type of sleep that was just the worst possible like I would wake up and feel more tired than I then I went to bed cuz

51:52 I was like fighting for life all night long and so these drugs are deeply

51:58 addictive absolutely terrible uh all of the benzos I like definitely a mission

52:05 of mine to get people off them it took a long time and a lot of work but I I’m gladly off them that’s awesome yeah no

52:13 that’s my goal for all my patients my goal for all my patients is actually to take no pharmaceutical medication like

52:18 zero I’m like you can take all the supplements you want but my goal is for them to take no pharmaceutical

52:24 medications ideally but this sleep is what really gets me and the ADHD you

52:29 know people say well I have ADHD so does it make sense to you that if I have ADHD but I’m also telling you that I

52:36 have insomnia that you put me on a stimulant does that make sense that has never made sense to me like you just

52:43 anyway it makes sense like short term like uh like dopaminergically to get like the you know the the system this

52:51 kind of gets into that masculine energy where we’re like very dopamine dominant and unfortunately we’re trying to put

52:56 women again into like this dopamine dopamine world that’s like driving driving driving driving but like um that

53:06 is a definitely a shortterm solution and and we do caffeine or the ingredient I

53:13 came up with parisan thing like short term if if you’re tired like you know then like that makes sense uh sometimes

53:21 you have to get things done get through the day but like ultimately that’s going to be diminishing return

53:27 absolutely yeah so then what would you recommend for people with maybe anxiety

53:34 depression again yeah testosterone estrogen progesterone obviously but if we’re talking from a supplement

53:40 perspective are there certain things that you recommend I think that methylated B vitamins you already said

53:45 it I use a ton of methylated B vitamins for anxiety um depression I use a lot of Samy depending on if they have a PO T

53:53 mutation I like berate sodium but or things that like five HTP is that what

53:59 it is the precursor to trip toan for your gut I like that um but tell us what

54:05 else you tell us about your supplement yeah even better uh than is is in a a

54:10 version of beate that I brought to Market is a triglyceride form that’s optimized for uptake that’s called

54:16 tribin y um and so that’s something to look into as as the postbiotic that that

54:22 you’re you’re mentioning as far as like kind of the herbal Xanax if you will like the the

54:29 most powerful thing that I’ve come across and it doesn’t have negative side effects is like the um hanal and dihydro

54:37 hanal beta um those are very powerful compounds um dihydro hanal betas it’s

54:44 metabolite um there’s less research on that than there is hanal it’s a parent

54:50 compound it’s um pro drug if you will um but those are both very powerful

54:58 and then along the lines of the adaptogens there’s one that’s really powerful for stress and that is Holy

55:04 basal uh I like that one also if you tend to be more in that like frazzled

55:10 mindset and this is great when you combine with caffeine or paranthe or any stimulant but it’s great on its own is

55:17 eleanine that’s a it’s an amino acid that tends to put you in more of that Alpha brain wave state like where you’re

55:24 more in like a flow state that’s what I need while I’m writing my

55:29 book just kidding yeah like two 200 plus milligrams would be ideal and um yeah

55:36 definitely check out like for kind of like Breakthrough anxiety I would say like that’s where like that hanal is

55:42 powerful but again going back to magnesium and the B vitamins those are

55:47 going to be foundational when it comes to stress and your capacity for stress

55:52 when you when you think about like I’m stressed I feel overwhelmed you have to like take a step back and think about

56:00 like is this would this normally be overwhelming if it if your answer is no

56:08 then you have to like look at the other things that you’re diet your supplementation like did you get enough

56:15 sleep you know our capacity for that additional stress is going to be much lower if we got four hours of sleep

56:22 versus eight if we’re in a toxic relationship if if we’re getting exposed

56:28 to carcinogens at work or you know if there’s mold in your house or whatever

56:33 it is like there could be a reason that your capacity for stress is so

56:40 low yeah no I agree and I think that’s the other problem with in my opinion

56:46 Society is like as soon as there is a symptom people immediately want to fix

56:52 it’s not like let’s step back and think about this right like

56:57 Monday for example why was I stressed well I know why I was stressed because we had been in Vegas all weekend I had

57:03 been at this conference I wasn’t sleeping like I normally was I probably wasn’t drinking the amount of water you

57:08 know it’s just different and then also I know I also forgot my magnesium and that’s a huge trigger for me I know that

57:14 like I take magnesium I take vitamin D I take B12 I wasn’t sleeping as good um so

57:19 I hadn’t have my magnesium uh I forgot my vitamin I wasn’t yeah I wasn’t

57:25 sleeping well I had been traveling you know and then plus I’m in like the back half of my cycle so my progesterone’s

57:31 high and I don’t have any estrogen it’s like so when I was like losing my mind on Monday I’m like okay this really

57:38 isn’t that hard it’s just I’m like I need to reset right like I can do this it’s just I need to reset all these

57:44 things and I think that’s what people forget is like to your point and and could I have could I have came home and

57:51 cried and flipped out and made someone write me a prescription or whatever and done it yeah I could have but I’m like

57:56 that’s just not what I want anymore like what I want to do is I came home on Monday I ate dinner I took a walk I went

58:01 to bed and then Tuesday I actually took a nap at lunch and I went to bed early

58:06 on Tuesday and I went to bed early last night and I felt great today and so like it’s just people want this like

58:12 immediate fix though right instead of like why is my body giving me the signal and then what do I need to do to fix it

58:18 right and it’s I get it cuz I was there at one point in my life like you I was thankfully never addicted to benzos but

58:24 I took sleeping medicine at one point I took anxiety medicine at one point I took I don’t want any of that now like

58:30 you know I what I want to do is figure out like why do I feel like this and let’s fix it and I think that’s a lot of the problem with today and right now is

58:37 because we live in this world like you talk about of like go go go go go um it’s okay to be like no I’m not you know

58:44 I’m not going to do that it’s okay to disappoint people sometimes as long as you you know know where you’re going

58:51 right it’s about the direction not about the speed so there you go

58:56 yeah so I like all of those I think those are good recommendations um we covered sleep we

59:05 covered hormones do do you have anything in particular you recommend for people with

59:11 ADHD like if they’re trying to get off of medications have you ever used like

59:16 dihexa meth blue any of those yeah so Paris anthene is one that is like a

59:24 light CNS stimulus that doesn’t have the downsides in terms of elevating heart

59:30 rate uh affecting blood pressure Etc it’s a much more

59:35 mild uh version of of caffeine in terms of side effects but more potent in terms

59:42 of its neut Tropic effects so I do like paranthe I do like as we talked about

59:47 lening uh Alpha GPC is a like bioavailable form of choline that’s my

59:54 favorite that Improv improves Focus um so those are all like really

1:00:01 helpful as far as um magnesium deficiency again I’m going to keep going

1:00:07 back to that that’s going to affect uh your ability to focus or hold concentration I do like the adaptogens

1:00:15 in terms of focus as well uh in particular my favorite uh the most neut

1:00:21 Tropic one is riola which is having some issues in terms of uh it being an endangered

1:00:28 species but now we can get a purified active from riola called

1:00:34 cidde uh so cidde is is really amazing

1:00:40 as well and um like yeah dixa is cool uh there’s

1:00:47 also sank and seac um um there cerebral

1:00:52 lysin uh you can try those peptides methylene blue is really interesting um

1:00:59 on on the front of that’s actually what I spoke about at arrm as well as

1:01:05 paranthe methylene blue is one of the only substances that’s really going to

1:01:10 be like an artificial electron transport chain um

1:01:16 electron donor like it’s going to like what all that means that sounds

1:01:21 complicated is that it’s helping uh a lot of lot of times the mitochondria there’s dysfunction in

1:01:28 there and and there’s like different um sets of this electron

1:01:34 transport chain where like uh an electron can kind of get stuck and not transfer and so um this is where the

1:01:44 dysfunction leads to like suboptimal energy production and leads to all of

1:01:50 these side effects that we talked about like with oxidation glycation inflammation

1:01:56 um because you’re not producing enough energy and so methylene blue can help

1:02:01 like be this synthetic electron U donor like where there’s

1:02:07 dysfunction in the mitochondria it can step in and kind of like guide things along essentially so it’s going to be

1:02:15 one of those things like if you were like incredibly healthy you might not notice much this is kind of like the

1:02:21 ketogenic diet like you know you might not notice as much but if you

1:02:26 um if you’re someone that is deeply metabolically dysfunctional and in this insufficient

1:02:34 cellular energy State methylene blue or the ketogenic diet or things like

1:02:39 dihydroberberine which by the way we didn’t talk about but is I think could be tremendous um for hormone

1:02:44 optimization because blood sugar plays a huge role um but that can be significant

1:02:52 U methylene blue so it is worth exploring yeah I use a lot of methylene blue in my practice last question about

1:03:00 supplements libido we sort of touched on it are there any other supplements nitric oxide you said anything else that

1:03:07 you recommend for women in particular like I feel like women get the shaft on this yeah everyone’s always like oh Ed

1:03:15 men low libido but women lose half of their testosterone by mid3 and by the

1:03:20 time we’re in our 40s most of our testosterone or androgens are gone and so it’s very common for women to have

1:03:26 low sex driver low libbido in their 40s so what besides you know taking care of yourself not being stressed actually

1:03:32 liking your husband sleeping all of those things what else can you do to help your libido if you’re not going to

1:03:38 replace your testosterone yeah Horny Go weed as funny as that one sounds it

1:03:43 there’s a lot of people think of it as like male liido but it works uh just as well in women um it does free up

1:03:52 testosterone it works by shbg like sex hormone in globulin so what it’s doing

1:03:58 is it may raise testosterone a little bit like maybe 10 15% if you’re lucky if

1:04:05 you’re taking a great extract and it’s working really well and maybe you were suboptimal testosterone male or female

1:04:12 but what it’s doing on a kind of more important level is freeing up more free

1:04:19 testosterone so that is able to interact at the receptor the Androgen receptor

1:04:24 more um so that’s that’s one that I would definitely recommend and and D3 can have

1:04:30 a big impact on libido too and testosterone production um as well so uh also just

1:04:38 hormesis in general like doing hot and cold like hot finish sauna uh doing uh

1:04:45 cold plunges especially if you’re doing both like doing contrasting that can be

1:04:50 very helpful working out especially if you’re doing high-intensity interval training or heavy lifting a lot of women

1:04:56 tend to shy away from heavier weights thinking they’re going to get bulky or it’s just too difficult don’t like heavy

1:05:04 weights is where it’s at like that is going to impact bone it’s going to

1:05:09 impact muscle it’s going to impact connective tissue it’s going to impact your brain it’s going to impact

1:05:15 longevity heavy lifting is where it’s at okay well thank you for coming on and

1:05:23 talking to us about all of this tell everyone just briefly do you have any I mean we’ll link your supplement or we’ll
